Power Sources

In just four years, MCE customers have reduced 131 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions—the equivalent of the carbon sequestered by Muir Woods over 87 years!

Where Our Power Comes From

MCE procures our energy from clean, renewable sources such as solar, wind, bioenergy, geothermal, and small hydroelectricity. We closely research and monitor our suppliers to ensure that they are using green, responsible practices, sourcing our power from renewable energy providers throughout California, Oregon, and Washington State. Not only is our power greener, it’s also as local as possible. See our power sources in our 2013 Power Content Label. MCE Power Map

Why Renewable Power Matters

Harmful greenhouse gases are directly linked to fossil fuels and the energy we use to power our homes and businesses, so MCE’s mission is to make it easier for customers in Marin County, unincorporated Napa County, and the Cities of Richmond, Benicia, and San Pablo to use a higher percentage of renewable energy instead of traditional oil, nuclear, and coal sources. Our number one goal is to offer responsible, reliable energy to our customers. Most of our customers use our 50% renewable Light Green service; for our Deep Green customers, we buy 100% renewable power; and for Sol Shares customers, we offer 100% new, local solar power.

Energy Development

MCE has contracts with 12 different suppliers for 17 different energy contracts, and that number will continue to grow. MCE currently has more than 195 megawatts of new California renewable energy under development for our customers. We’re also committed to the development of local renewable energy projects within our service area. Learn about our local renewable projects.

Integrated Resource Plan

We follow an Integrated Resource Plan, updated annually to quantify our resource needs and provide guidance in our electricity procurement process. Goals include progress toward our long-term objective of 100% renewable energy for all customers, as well as short-term goals that set local parameters around electricity procurement and storage.
